Bird is the Word Exhibit

Bird is the Word – Selections from the Permanent Collection

Norfolk County, with its varied habitats and incredible Lake Erie shoreline, is known as one of Canada’s foremost birding destinations. Visitors to Long Point, in particular, have the opportunity to observe large numbers of migrating species during the spring and fall. Over the years, more than 400 species have been sighted. Bird Studies Canada, Long Point World Biosphere and the Long Point Bird Observatory have produced a Long Point Bird Trail map which lists 40 publicly accessible, birding hot spots.
The Long Point Bird Observatory was established in 1960; it is the oldest, active bird observatory in the Americas. The Observatory was founded by the Ontario Bird Banding Association and has been tracking the numbers of various bird species for over half a century. The data gathered by the Observatory is an invaluable resource for both scientists studying birds and those monitoring how changes to our environment impact living species.

The Norfolk Arts Centre has its own collection of birds. Our collection ranges from the realistic to the fantastic. Many of the birds illustrated in the exhibit are species that can be readily seen in Norfolk County. We hope you enjoy this selection of birds from our permanent collection and encourage you to get out and explore the Long Point Bird Trail.  Happy Birding!
